Vestas to team up with Xcel on a massive wind farm

BRIGHTON, Colo. — Vestas Wind Systems is teaming up with Xcel Energy on a huge 600-megawatt project in eastern Colorado, Portland Business Journal reported.

The project will be Colorado’s largest wind farm.

David Eves, president and CEO of Xcel’s Colorado subsidiary Public Service Co., announced the plan Tuesday at Vestas’ wind-turbine nacelles factory in Brighton. Vestas will build the 300 turbines for the project, Eves said.

“They’ll be manufactured right here,” Eves said as a group of wind industry executives from Vestas, its suppliers and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) applauded the news.

Adding wind power means “hundreds of millions of dollars in savings for Colorado energy customers,” Eves said.

“We’re very excited about it,” he said of the project.

Vestas, based in Denmark, is one of the world’s biggest wind turbine manufacturers. Its North American operations are based in Portland.
